About

Launched in July 2009, the Hudson Square Connection is leading the neighborhood’s transformation into a major creative hub, home to over 30,000 people working in advertising, design, media, communications and other cutting edge businesses. Our district is generally bounded by West Houston Street on the north, Canal Street on the south, 6th Avenue on the east and Greenwich Street on the west.

The mission of the Connection is to put the Hudson Square neighborhood on the map while simultaneously improving local traffic congestion, beautifying and enlivening the streets, and re-enforcing a socially, culturally and environmentally connected community. Our goal is to capture the spirit and innovation that is thriving in the commercial spaces and bring that energy into the public realm.

The Hudson Square Connection is a 501c3, funded primarily through the payment of an annual assessment on commercial property. The NYC Department of Finance disburses these funds to the BID through a contract with the Department of Small Business Services.

Volunteers and Artists came to Hudson Square to decorate the streets with a temporary public art exhibit called “Flaming Cactus.”  Artist Preston Dane from Animus Arts Collective used over 55,000 zip ties to cover 24 light poles along Spring Street, the park at Spring Street and Sixth Avenue and the Trump SoHo Urban Plaza.  The Flaming Cactus is an effort to use innovation to create art from inexpensive, everyday materials.  The public art is an alternative take on holiday decoration for the neighborhood filled with advertising and media companies.  As with most public art, the Flaming Cactus is a great piece of sidewalk discussion.

On Tuesday, December 6th the Connection will host a “Cactus Lighting” party.  The decorated lamp posts in the Trump SoHo Urban Plaza on Spring Street will be brightly lit from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.  Guests can enjoy free live music from the Xylopholks and hot apple cider and refreshments courtesy of Quattro Gastronomia Italiana.

The Connection will host a raffle with a grand prize for a “stay-cation” at the Trump SoHo.  The “stay-cation” package includes a one night weekend stay for the winner and one guest in a King size deluxe guest room and a 45 minute Turkish Hamman experience.  To enter the raffle guests must bring a new, unwrapped toy as part of Manhattan Mini Storage’s annual toy drive to support the Partnership for the Homeless.  From now until the event the Hudson Square Pharmacy will give an additional discount on toys when you show the Connection Card.

Stop by the plaza for a night of music, charity, and public art!

On November 15, 2011, the Hudson Square Connection held its Second Annual Meeting at the Jerome L. Greene Performance Space. We had a great turn out from the local business community, but it wasn’t just all business, it was also a celebration of the neighborhood. We honored Michael Dorf of City Winery for creating and hosting the Hudson Square Music and Wine Festival for the past three years, and Jacques Torres treated us to stories and a sampling of his chocolates.

Click HERE to read our 2011 Annual Report.

In addition to the some official business, we announced the winner of the second annual Connection Award. This year, Michael Dorf, owner of City Winery was the recipient of the award for his contribution to the community in the form of the Hudson Square Music & Wine Festival and his Hudson Square branded, Hudson Square made fine wines.

Scott Stowell, graphic designer and owner of Open also talked about new ways for the Hudson Square community to share their input on how we should transform our neighborhood’s streetscape. In addition a “mobilization kit” that companies can get just by calling the Connection (the first 10 are free!), we’re also launching #HudsonSquareIs and a companion website where you can tell us what you think!

And the meeting was also a great party where neighbors could taste our local wines, eat our local chocolates, sample great catering from Great Performances and connect with one another.
