The New Hudson Square

The Hudson Square Connection is exploring creative ways to build upon the safe and clean foundation already existing in Hudson Square.  We will be addressing traffic congestion and streetscape with a fresh approach – beautifying the public spaces, enhancing the retail environment and creating a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood full of economic, social and environmental resources.

More than planting trees and installing bike racks, we will make changes to the sidewalks, roads and other elements of Hudson Square’s infrastructure to better manage stormwater run-off, reduce waste and save energy.  In doing so, the Hudson Square Connection will be advancing the City’s sustainability objectives outlined in PlaNYC 2030 ‘A Greener, Greater New York.’

PTMs on Varick Street

In our efforts to strike a balance between pedestrians, local deliveries and through traffic and Jersey-bound commuters, the Connection is launching a pedestrian & traffic management pilot. We have hired Pedestrian & Traffic Managers (PTMs) to supplement the City’s current Traffic Enforcement Agents, deployed to ensure pedestrians have open, safe crosswalks on Varick Street.

The pilot will run for six months during evening rush hours, in which PTMs will be tasked to keep intersections and crosswalks clear for pedestrian use and local through traffic.  An anticipated benefit is less honking!

PTM pilot at-a-glance:

What will the PTMs do?

  • Make our streets safer and easier to cross
  • Prevent motorists from blocking the box and intersections
  • Create a better pedestrian experience
  • Less honking!

When are the PTMs on the street?

  • Wednesday – Friday
  • 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm
  • 6 month pilot to assess effectiveness

Where will the PTMs be?

  • Varick Street:  Spring – Houston Streets

About the PTMs

The Pedestrian & Traffic Managers (PTMs) are employees of Sam Schwartz Engineering (SSE), working under a contract with the Hudson Square Connection.  To report specific issues with the PTMs, please contact the Hudson Square Connection at (212) 463-9160 or email info@HudsonSquareBID.org.  Please include your contact information.
