The New Hudson Square
The Hudson Square Connection is exploring creative ways to build upon the safe and clean foundation already existing in Hudson Square. We will be addressing traffic congestion and streetscape with a fresh approach – beautifying the public spaces, enhancing the retail environment and creating a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood full of economic, social and environmental resources.
More than planting trees and installing bike racks, we will make changes to the sidewalks, roads and other elements of Hudson Square’s infrastructure to better manage stormwater run-off, reduce waste and save energy. In doing so, the Hudson Square Connection will be advancing the City’s sustainability objectives outlined in PlaNYC 2030 ‘A Greener, Greater New York.’

(Original Notice Below)
The Hudson Square District Management Association d/b/a the Hudson Square Connection has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the development of a comprehensive streetscape improvement plan for the Hudson Square Business Improvement District.
The main goal of the Streetscape Improvement Plan is to provide the Hudson Square Connection with creative solutions to better manage traffic and create a pedestrian-friendly environment, to create more and more usable open space, and to green our streets. The Streetscape Improvement Plan needs to support the overall mission of the Hudson Square Connection and promote social, economic and environmental sustainability, create opportunities for retail and help define the neighborhood identity.
Selected consultants are asked to develop an overall vision and design framework for the district’s streetscape and to recommend specific, catalytic streetscape improvement projects. Projected starting date is October 1, 2010. Anticipated deadline for the final report is July 1, 2011. We expect interested firms to form teams and submit proposals as a team. The team should be design-oriented. We consider landscape architecture a central design element of the Streetscape Improvement Plan. The lead firm should have the experience and capacity to manage the team and the project.
Deadline for responses to the RFP: August 23, 2010, 5:00 PM EST.

Recycle with Aveda!
Updated: Wednesday, July 7th, 2010
You probably knew that our neighbors at the Aveda Institute provide an amazing spa experience, and you possibly knew they also train people to become stylists here but did you know they are also out to save the earth?
Ok – maybe that is not their prime objective but since its inception Aveda’s mission is to provide high performance botanically based products that serve both people and the planet. And now, they are taking additional steps – and you can too!
Aveda recycles bottle caps – they take the top of old bottles and make new ones for their products. More recently, in response to the oil crisis in the gulf, they are collecting and recycling hair and sending it to Matter of Trust – who uses this to absorb the oil in the gulf.
To learn more about these and other programs, you can click on the links above, or just walk into the institute located at 233 Spring Street.

Radiolab: Where Sound Illuminates Ideas
Updated: Monday, June 28th, 2010
Hudson Square has always been a popular spot for artists who love to think “outside the box” – this is exactly what Robert Krulwich and Jad Abumrad have been doing in Hudson Square since they founded their WNYC show “Radiolab” in 2003.
Radiolab investigates and provides answers to listeners’ difficult questions that often blur the boundaries between science, philosophy and human experience. While the world of science is the focus of the show, Radiolab pairs their intellectual topics with a distinct selection of music to give the program a little twist.
The show is produced out of WNYC’s studios at 160 Varick St. and the hosts have found that some of the show’s biggest fans are their fellow neighbors in Hudson Square. “We keep getting fan letters from folks who work right around the block. It’s
been great to find out that there are so many creative minds in the neighborhood,” said Jad.
Radiolab can now be heard on over 230 stations throughout the country with 10 hour-long programs each year. To find out where you can hear Radiolab or to listen to their podcasts, visit their website by clicking here.

TNY Shares TLC for Neighborhood Trees
Updated: Wednesday, April 28th, 2010
To create a meaningful neighborhood-wide legacy for Earth Day 2010, 60 Hudson Square professionals and students were taught how to plant, preserve and protect trees and flowers that grow along our city streets. This was the Connection’s second event with the non-profit environmental group Trees New York, (TNY) the “million trees people.”
Hudson Square Connection first tapped TNY when they hosted a workshop for commercial building managers and maintenance personnel. Through the Street Tree Care Maintenance Workshop, local employees now know the best practices for taking care of the trees around their buildings.
Our second event, on Earth Day, gave a chance for the broader community to get involved. Students from Chelsea Vocational High School worked side by side with volunteers from Penguin, Corbis, Porter Novelli, Turner Construction, MTV Networks and Weidlinger, mulching and watering the trees and planting flowers in the tree beds. When you see these new plantings, you can thank your neighbors for adding a little color to your day.
We would like to thank HERE Art Center for letting us use their space, NYC Department of Environmental Protection for donating re-usable water bottles and Trinity for planting 17 new trees at 345 and 350 Hudson Street. Special thanks to Susan, Mary, Maeve, Nelson, Sam and Steve from Trees New York for organizing this event.
TNY was started in 1976 and has taught more than 11,000 people how to care for local forestry. TNY and its programs focus on stewardship, education and community.
In 2007, in conjunction with Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the group set the goal of planting and caring for one million new trees throughout the city in the following ten years. Hudson Square Connection is proud to participate in helping the city accomplish this goal.

Trees around Hudson Square
Updated: Thursday, April 1st, 2010
On Wednesday, March 24, the Connection assisted Trees New York in hosting an event for neighborhood property owners to learn about street tree care and maintenance. The group took a stroll around Hudson Square to see examples of challenges associated with tree care, and ways of addressing those challenges. Everyone asked lots of questions, and came away knowing just a little bit more about how we can all help to improve and maintain our neighborhood’s streetscape!
This is just one small step for the Connection and Trees New York in the gradual process of sprucing up the neighborhood’s streets. We will continue planting trees in the months and years to come, with the goal of beautifying and enlivening the neighborhood we live and work in
