Check out the weekly music lineup and festival details. ABOUT THE WOOD BROTHERS Oliver Wood (guitar, vocals) moved to Atlanta, honed his guitar and vocal chops, and formed the Southeast blues/rock outfit, King Johnson. His younger brother, Chris Wood (bass, vocals, harmonica), moved to New York City, immersed himself in the city’s lively jazz-improv scene, and formed the internationally acclaimed genre-busting trio Medeski Martin & Wood. It wasn’t until 2004 when the brothers seized an opportunity at a family gathering that they decided to record their own material. Impressed by the outcome of those initial sessions, MMW’s manager passed the demos to Blue Note Records and no sooner had they begun to think of themselves as a band, The Wood Brothers had a record deal. 2006 saw the release of their debut album, Ways Not to Lose, which was named top pick in folk by Amazon.com’s editors that year. “Modern folk and blues rarely sounds as inventive and colorful,” declared Amazon reviewers. Ways was produced by MMW’s John Medeski, who had been stunned by Oliver’s compositions. “He’s an unbelievable songwriter – his material is deep.” Medeski went on to produce The Wood Brothers’ 2008 follow-up, Loaded, heralded as one of NPR’s “Overlooked 11”. 2011 will mark the release of The Wood Brothers’ third full-length studio album, Smoke Ring Halo, to be released on Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Records. Working with producer/engineer Jim Scott (Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Wilco, Tom Petty), the Woods were able to explore new sounds. The Wood Brothers continue to win over fans through their live performances. In addition to headlining intimate venues across the U.S., The Wood Brothers have supported established artists like Levon Helm, k.d. Lang, Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers and most recently, Zac Brown Band. Though their paths diverged for many years, the Woods were never far from the musical currents that formed their musical impulses in the first place. It may be part influences and part blood. But it’s all magic.
