A Different Way to Celebrate your Valentine

Updated: Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

When the streets clear from the bustle of the workday, the night brings a different character to the streets of the Hudson Square.  And around this Valentine’s Day the streets will be filled with romance.  Budding romancers look to impress in new relationships.  Other long lasting relationships celebrate the holiday with staycations and intimate settings.  However you ‘choose to woo’ let Hudson Square be the place to celebrate with your valentine.

Everyone thinks of the heart shaped box of chocolates for a V-Day gift.  At Jacques Torres, they turn it up a notch and offer a creative spin on the originals.  Pick up giant chocolate lips, a frog Prince Charming, or a spanker.  Spankers are Chef Torres’s personal creation for the more humorous couples, oversized chocolate lollipops that in fact read “Spank Me.”

Ladies, you want to look nice for the special night out.  From hair and make up to wardrobe, you can get the celebrity treatment.  Start with a class of Physique 57 to and exude confidence with your toned body.  Find your perfect dress on Rent the Runway.  Use your Connection Card for discounts on online orders at Rent the Runway and various classes at Physique 57.  The special packages at Space Salon will also help you secure the follow up date in weeks to come.  From February 1st to 15th you can choose from various beauty packages that include rose, jasmine or lavender pedicures and scalp massages, conditioning treatment and a blow out.  Looking for the full pampered experience?  They also have the Fresh Face Makeup services.  Everything you need to glow for the special night out!

Possibly the hardest part of the night, or any special date night for that matter, is deciding what to do.  In Hudson Square you have every option from a staycation to tasting menus and music shows to haunted shows!

Start by booking a hotel romance package.  The Trump Hotel package offers elegance and exclusivity where you can stay in a Deluxe City View One Bedroom Suite with champagne, chocolate covered strawberries and breakfast the following morning.  The Hampton Inn SoHo has a more low key Romance Package including the holiday staples of champagne, wine, flowers and chocolates.

If you are planning a dinner, go beyond the usual restaurant picks.  Pao! is offering a lovely Caipirao drink made from limes and Licor Beirao, an herb and seed liquor. 508 Restaurant will have a prix fixe menu with some special additions.  Share small plates or flatbreads or pastas paired with selections from their extensive beer and wine, and finished with dessert.  Enjoy dinner and music at Sounds of Brazil (SOBs).  Dance the night away with American jazz and hip hop singer Bilal and enjoy a three course dinner with a bottle of wine or pitcher of sangria.

And if you can’t vacation to Napa Valley for a night, visit NYC’s own City Winery.  Experience Romance in the Barrel Room with a 3 course Prix Fixe menu crafted by Chef Andres Barrera.  They are also offering a Valentine’s Wine and Cheese pairing.  City Winery and Murray’s Cheeses pair 5 sparkling wines with 5 cheeses and 5 locally made chocolates.  Seating is first come first serve, so be sure to arrive promptly with your date.

While there is plenty of variety to celebrate the beloved holiday, there are some who stray from the traditional sense of romance.  Blood Manor wants to prove that October is not the only haunting month.  Visit the Valentine’s Day Massacre on February 10th and 11th. This will sure be a Valentine’s Day never to forget!

Volunteers and Artists came to Hudson Square to decorate the streets with a temporary public art exhibit called “Flaming Cactus.”  Artist Preston Dane from Animus Arts Collective used over 55,000 zip ties to cover 24 light poles along Spring Street, the park at Spring Street and Sixth Avenue and the Trump SoHo Urban Plaza.  The Flaming Cactus is an effort to use innovation to create art from inexpensive, everyday materials.  The public art is an alternative take on holiday decoration for the neighborhood filled with advertising and media companies.  As with most public art, the Flaming Cactus is a great piece of sidewalk discussion.

On Tuesday, December 6th the Connection will host a “Cactus Lighting” party.  The decorated lamp posts in the Trump SoHo Urban Plaza on Spring Street will be brightly lit from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.  Guests can enjoy free live music from the Xylopholks and hot apple cider and refreshments courtesy of Quattro Gastronomia Italiana.

The Connection will host a raffle with a grand prize for a “stay-cation” at the Trump SoHo.  The “stay-cation” package includes a one night weekend stay for the winner and one guest in a King size deluxe guest room and a 45 minute Turkish Hamman experience.  To enter the raffle guests must bring a new, unwrapped toy as part of Manhattan Mini Storage’s annual toy drive to support the Partnership for the Homeless.  From now until the event the Hudson Square Pharmacy will give an additional discount on toys when you show the Connection Card.

Stop by the plaza for a night of music, charity, and public art!

Flaming Cactus

Updated: Sunday, November 27th, 2011

Hudson Square just got a little brighter!

The Connection, in partnership with Animus Arts, the Department of Transportation and Trump Hotel, installed 23 “Flaming Cactus” along Spring Street, Little 6th Avenue and in the Urban Plaza adjacent to the Trump Hotel.

52,000+ fluorescent colored zip-ties were assembled and then wrapped around poles to transform something that is by nature cold and utilitarian into something colorful, whimsical, and artistic.

This display will be up through the holidays.

Stay tuned for more information about weekly contests and a special event to bring Hudson Square together for the holidays.

Holiday Cactus coming to Hudson Square

Updated: Thursday, November 17th, 2011

The Hudson Square Connection is adding a little twist to traditional holiday decorations, artist Animus Arts Collective will be adding 23 ‘Flaming Cacti’ to the district!

What is a ‘flaming cactus,’ you might ask?

It is an ordinary streetlight pole that has been transformed into a public art display using nothing more than bright, fluorescent-colored zip ties. The artist hand-makes a sleeve of zip ties and wraps the poles in a way that resembles a desert cactus. These vibrant creations will be on display primarily on Spring Street, Little Sixth Avenue and the Urban Plaza next to Trump through January.

So keep an eye out for these unique decorations coming soon to Hudson Square for the holiday season. And feel free to Tweet @HudsonSquareNYC some creative pictures alongside the ‘cacti!’

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011Lunch Cafe at SOB’s

Updated: Monday, October 17th, 2011

SOBs Announces The Opening of Its Lunch Café
Monday – Friday, Noon – 3:30 pm

SOBs is known to many people as a historic music venue, but few know that one of the secrets of its success for over 30 years is what happens in its kitchen.

On Tuesday, October 18th SOBs is proud to present its Lunch Cafe, the newly launched luncheonette experience open on Monday-Friday from Noon-3:30 pm.

SOBs has found itself part of Hudson Square neighborhood, a bubbling hub of entertainment, food and culture. With that being the case the legendary restuarant-venue felt it was only fair to give its neighbors a taste of what they may have been missing, by serving lunch every weekday.

Therefore, SOBs has turned down the music and turned up the heat to let its food be the star of the show.

Joining the world class culinary team to help create the fantastic new menu, is daytime Chef, Fernando Garcia, who is a veteran of the NY food scene. Chef Garcia has worked at such restaurants as Patria, Asia De Cuba & Erizo Latino working along such names as Chef Douglas Rodriguez, Chef Alex Garcia & Eric Busulto.

With Chef Garcia’s vision SOBs has created a menu that has an exciting contemporary flavor and could best be described as Latin comfort food at its best.

It features such dishes as Shrimp Ceviche, Spanish Lentil Soup, Chicken Quesadilla, a Classic Cuban Roast Sandwich, Seafood Paella & of course a wonderful selection of Salads and other Entreés, including the much talked Houston Salad.

Join SOBs for the launch of what will undoubtedly be a classic lunch experience in lower Manhattan.
