Pianist Aaron Parks hails from the state of Washington and is now one of jazz’s most prized musical figures – named a “New Visionary” in the September 2008 issue of JazzTimes magazine. We featured him in our Jazz Gallery Composers Series in 2007 with a project that took the title “Archetypes: Character Studies in Sound.” Possessing a musical maturity far beyond his years, he began his membership in Terence Blanchard’s groundbreaking ensemble at age 18. He has also toured and performed extensively with Kurt Rosenwinkel and many other important bandleaders. Aesthetically, Aaron is informed by everyone from Herbie Hancock to Aphex Twin to Toru Takemitsu. His piano approach combines technical dazzle with a contemplative touch and a subtle harmonic palette – qualities that were well documented on his auspicious 2008 debut for Blue Note Records, Invisible Cinema. He returns this week at the helm of an impressive quintet.
