Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Lawrence Fields was raised in a musical household and found to have a near-genius IQ as a child. He skipped two consecutive grades to enter high school early. After attending university for computer science, he was hired as a web developer. Acknowledging a growing love for musical performance, however, Lawrence left his job to attend Berklee College of music and was awarded the school’s first ever James Williams Scholarship in honor of the late pianist and composer.

Lawrence was a member the Jeff “Tain” Watts quartet for several years, and has performed more recently as a member of the Nicholas Payton Quintet. Additionally, Lawrence has performed or recorded with artists including Branford Marsalis and his Quartet, Terri Lyne Carrington, Delfeayo Marsalis, Tim Warfield and Charles McPherson, as well as New York mainstays Myron Walden, Jaleel Shaw, Rodney Green, and Lage Lund.
