Sounds of Brazil on the corner of Varick & West Houston

Updated: Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Hudson Square’s long-cherished S.O.B.’s has spent more than a quarter century attracting audiences from around the city and world to its vibrant and diverse performances.  The venue’s stage has hosted Grammy winning artists like John Legend and Kanye West while offering an array of World Music performances.

S.O.B’s owner and director, Larry Gold, also happens to come from a family with a storied past in Hudson Square – his sister owns Deb’s Deli and his father once operated a luncheonette in the same building as S.O.B.’s.  It was his family connection that helped him launch this New York City landmark.

“I had just come back from Europe where international music had captured my heart and ears,” said Larry.  “I came back with youthful enthusiasm and my father was open to taking a gamble on my concept of opening, at the time, a Brazilian club.”

Over the 28 years that Larry has worked in Hudson Square, his fondest memory is of the nights he has spent enjoying the lively scene in the district after dark.

“I remember the heart of Hudson Square as being vibrant with a pulsating night scene within the triangle that was S.O.B’s, Heartbreak and the Paradise Garage. Hipsters would jump from club to club and S.O.B’s staff would finish the night at the after hours dance spot Paradise Garage.”

S.O.B.’s also offers meals that are just as eclectic as its music selection. To explore their menu and learn more about upcoming performances, click here.  Employees who work in Hudson Square get free admission every Friday night until 8pm for the after work salsa party and happy hour!

Here Arts presents:  The Fortune Teller by Erik Sanko and Jessica Grindstaff

Show Press

“Attendance is highly advised. To miss it—now that would be a sin.”
— Village Voice
“Grandly satisfying piece of theatre in miniature.”
— Backstage

About the show

Seven strangers’ twisted tales are brought to life in this marionette play and woven with haunting music to tell an eerily comic story of fate and fortune. On a dark night, the strangers are invited to the mansion of a deceased millionaire, and learn that their inheritances will be based not on a will, but on the readings of a fortune teller. Each soon meets a gruesome end in this production developed through HERE’s Dream Music puppetry program.
