10 Questions with…Antarctica’s Marta
Updated: Thursday, November 17th, 2011
New York Magazine named Antarctica Bar one of NYC’s best bars for shooting pool, Marta, one of Antarctica’s beloved bartenders gives us the inside scoop.
1. How many years have you worked at Antarctica?
4 1/2 years.
2. Can you tell us a little about your day-to-day routine?
It is truly a neighborhood bar, we’ll learn your name and introduce ourselves. We’re like “Cheers” w/o snarky waitresses.
3. What’s your favorite part about coming to work every day at Antarctica?
The laid back, open and welcoming atmosphere. You can make the experience what you want– we’ve had wedding receptions, college reunions, movie premieres….and most often, people hanging out after work, playing pool or just talking.
4. How would you describe the culture/environment at Antarctica?
Richard Jefferson playing beer pong with some Penn alums (that is after he actually brought in his own ping pong table from his apartment).
5. This year Antarctica is celebrating its 276th birthday. Can you tell us a little about the bar’s history?
When it opened, the neighborhood was still super isolated, not much was here; also, as mascots go, the penguin is pretty awesome.
6. Does Antarctica have any signature drinks? If not, what is the most popular drink of choice?
Bud Light (but we’ll make you a haystack if you ask).
7. What’s one thing that even Antarctica’s regulars wouldn’t know about the bar?
What goes here on Sundays.
8. Tell us a little bit about Name Night?
We try to mix in common names with less common ones, and then add in some downright weird ones. People ask if they bring in an id with the name of the night, would they get free drinks. I tell them yes, if they go to the trouble of making a fake id for one night of drinking, you’re clearly dedicated to the bar.
9. How do you feel that Antarctica fits in with the creative vibe of Hudson Square?
We’re always on the lookout for the next Dylan Thomas.
10. What’s your favorite thing about working in this part of Manhattan?
It’s sort of a secret…people that live and work in the area know it’s quirks and spots, but there’s an intimacy, too. It’s not full of impersonal, big box chains. Walking down Hudson is always a pleasure.

Updated: Friday, October 21st, 2011
Architecture Research Office is a New York–based firm led by Stephen Cassell, Adam Yarinsky, and Kim Yao. Its work spans from strategic planning to architecture and urban design. Since 1993, the firm has worked with leading universities, cultural institutions, global corporations, government agencies, international fashion labels, and nonprofit organizations, utilizing research and analysis to drive the design. From a prototype for thousand-square-foot low-income sustainable housing to a proposal to reinvent the role of ecology and infrastructure in New York City, ARO uses design to unite the conceptual and the pragmatic within a strong, coherent vision.

Congrats to ARO
Updated: Monday, June 6th, 2011

The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum has awarded Hudson Square’s own Architecture Research Office the 2011 National Design Award for Architecture. The National Design Awards, which each year honor several creative disciplines, celebrate the very best in American design. Architecture Research Office will be honored at a number of events throughout the year, including during National Design Week in October.
The award honors Architecture Research Office’s recent body of work rather than the merit of a single project. Over the past year, the firm has completed construction on a major renovation and expansion of buildings at Union Square Park and has begun construction on the Donald Judd Home and Studio Museum. Presently in design are a performing arts center in Lower Manhattan and a dormitory at Tulane University as well as projects at Cornell University, University of Michigan, and Harvard University. The Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition Rising Currents featured ARO’s design proposal for new ecological infrastructure in Lower Manhattan, what Barry Bergdoll, Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design, cited as “nothing less than a new paradigm for city infrastructure.”
The National Design Awards is one of the few programs of its kind structured to continue to benefit the nation long after the Awards ceremony and gala. A suite of educational programs will be announced this summer in conjunction with the Awards by Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum’s award-winning Education Department, including a series of public programs, lectures, roundtables, and workshops based on the vision and work of the National Design Award winners.

Research and analysis drive design that unites the conceptual and the pragmatic within a strong, coherent vision. From a 1,000-square-foot low-income sustainable housing prototype to a proposal to reinvent the role of ecology and infrastructure in New York City, ARO uses design to elevate the quality of our world.

Wieden + Kennedy named Ad Age’s Agency of the Year
Updated: Tuesday, February 15th, 2011
Ad Age recently honored Hudson Square’s very own Wieden + Kennedy Agency of the Year. Weiden + Kennedy is a full-service, creatively driven advertising agency with offices around the world, including Amsterdam, London, Tokyo, Shanghai and Delhi. You’ve probably seen the ads created by Wieden, which range from humorous spots pegged to the series finale of “Lost” to comedian Maria Bamford playing a demented shopper. Wieden’s Hudson Square office has been getting a refresh under new managing director Neal Arthur, and is moving the needle for clients such as ESPN and Delta. Mr. Wieden is again confident about the hub’s prospects. “The Delta business has really livened that office up and given us new credibility with really complicated business propositions.”
