It’s hard to believe we’ve already been in operation for seven months. As we settle into a rhythm here at the Hudson Square Connection, we’ve been reflecting a little on how far we’ve come since this summer.

President’s Letter February ’10
It’s hard to believe we’ve already been in operation for seven months. As we settle into a rhythm here at the Hudson Square Connection, we’ve been reflecting a little on how far we’ve come since this summer.
What’s In a Name?
When we first introduced ourselves to the neighborhood at the City Winery/Great Performances’ first ever Hudson Square Music Festival last summer, referring to ourselves as a Business Improvement District seemed more baffling than enlightening. So we began to think about how our name could better describe our mission. Our goals are:
- To create a real sense of community among the businesses here; to create a sense of pride and ownership
- To get out the word about Hudson Square, a vibrant and creative place, just steps from SoHo, Tribeca and the Village
- To build a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable neighborhood
Our neighborhood has constantly evolved and re-created itself over time to keep abreast of the ways in which people communicate and connect. And that’s the spirit we want to reflect. So with the idea of helping to bring our businesses together with each other, with our City and with our planet, we decided to call ourselves the Hudson Square Connection. And we’ve spent our time making connections ever since:
- The Door and the Sylvia Center, two of Hudson Square’s not-for-profits, met though our Helping for the Holidays volunteer program and are now doing a joint program to teach inner-city kids hands-on culinary arts training, nutrition and work readiness for the food service and culinary arts fields
- Edelman public relations is hosting a breakfast on March 3rd where they'll talk about a terrific connection they made with Deb's Catering The breakfast will bring together Hudson Square’s human resources professionals to share some of their ideas about making the our workforce feel happy and healthy in this great neighborhood. Coming soon: breakfasts to bring together in-house press and public relations professionals from our companies and a second get together for company groups involved in sustainability initiatives
- We’re bringing together furniture and interior design professionals to plan a big splash at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, where, for the first time, Hudson Square will be featured as its own design destination
- As further described below, we’re working with all the areas restaurants and culture/entertainment spots to co-promote the venues through a program called Eat/Drink/Play/Think
And so much more. We’ve met with over 50 companies and we’d like to meet with everyone. As we continue to connect with our neighborhood, we want to make sure to connect with you. If you have anything you’d like to share with us, please call our offices at 212 463 9160. Let us know how we can help.

Many successful and creative companies call Hudson Square home, but did you know that within Hudson Square are just as many innovative and fun restaurants, performances spaces, art galleries and bars? We’ve introduced a new program, Eat /Drink/Play/Think: Hudson Square to let you know what’s going on right around the corner.
The next time you’re seeing a show or having a cocktail with friends after work in Hudson Square, take a moment to notice the decal in the window or the postcard in the doorway highlighting some of the other great venues in our neighborhood. Next time you’re on the website of one of the area’s performance spaces or restaurants, take a moment to click on the link that says Eat/Drink/Play/Think: Hudson Square for suggestions on where to go afterwards.
In the future we will be offering specials and discounts at the restaurants and cultural venues in the area- so keep checking back with your favorite local bar or playhouse, or our website- for the chance for a freebie and some suggestions for a fun night in Hudson Square!

Hudson Square Street Tree Stewardship Program
We are working with Trees New York to develop a Street Tree Stewardship Program for our neighborhood. Trees New York, the Manhattan Stewardship Coordinator for Million Trees NYC,is an environmental and urban forestry nonprofit which plants, preserves and protects New York City street trees through education, active citizen participation and advocacy.
This spring we will work with Trees New York to raise awareness and educate volunteers about tree care in our community. On Earth Day, we will organize local business owners, progessionals and high school students to care for our trees. We will also hold a Street Tree Care & Maintenance workshop for commercial building managers and maintenance personnel in Hudson Square.
We hope that this is a first step towards a long term Hudson Square Street Tree Stewardship program.
