We are honored to have this year’s guest speakers Mekanism’s Founder & Executive Director; Tommy Means, and Head of Strategy; Adama Sall, discussing the founding of Apollo 51 and the need to diversify the advertising industry.
About Apollo 51
Apollo 51 is a network of creative agencies committed to launching the careers of diverse interns. We hire aspiring creatives with underrepresented backgrounds and non-traditional portfolios because we believe diverse teams are good for business. Apollo 51 connects agencies to diverse talent and converts internships into careers. Join us on our mission.
About Mekanism
Mekanism is an independent, full-service advertising agency made up of creative entrepreneurs. With offices in SF, NYC, CHI and SEA, we serve as collaborative business partners with some of the world’s best brands, including HBO, MillerCoors, Peloton and Alaska Airlines. Our creative approach is best described as “The Soul & Science of Storytelling”: Communicating a brand’s purpose with ideas informed by data and rooted in human truths.

Tommy Means, Founder & Chief Creative Officer at Mekanism, and Co-Founder of Apollo 51
Tommy Means is a founding partner and Chief Creative Officer at Mekanism, a creative agency with offices in San Francisco, New York, Chicago and Seattle. One day while reflecting on his own unconventional path into advertising, Tommy was inspired to help address the ad industry’s continued struggle to hire and develop diverse creative talent.
What if Mekanism diversified its intern hires? What if everyone diversified their intern hires? Then those interns will go on to have careers and they would likely draw more diverse talent into the industry. Seems pretty straight-forward. So in 2017 Tommy launched Apollo 51 to bring diversity to internship programs and convert interns into talent.
Adama Sall, Head of Strategy at Mekanism, and Co-Founder of Apollo 51
Adama Sall’s positive outlook and worldly experience makes her the ideal Head of Strategy. With 17+ years of experience working on such accounts as Nike, Samsung, Nasdaq and HBO, she is equipped to offer insightful strategic planning for every type of brand. One of her proudest moments in advertising came to fruition when she worked with the Nike Foundation to help launch the Girl Effect – a cause that will always be near and dear to her heart.
As a Black woman in advertising, diversity has been an inherent part of her professional journey. To honor the incredible amount of support she’s received along the way, Adama co-founded Apollo 51 in 2017 to give other young, hungry creatives the opportunity to carve their own distinct paths in the ad world. Launching Apollo 51 is making this a reality.
