Long aspired to be a film director, Leon and friend and collaborator Manuel Arce began with a 20-minute surrealistic short before realizing their dream with the low-budget feature-length comedy-drama EL SUPER (1979), which The Miami Herald hailed as “the ultimate Cuban exile film.” Along with directing popular TV shows such as Miami Vice, Crime Story, and The Equalizer, Leon went on to capture the vitality of his adopted city – and the excitement of its Latin music explosion – in feature films that launched the film acting careers of Rubén Blades, Marc Anthony, Elizabeth Pea, and Benjamin Bratt.
