Join us for our 3rd annual Pride Cultural Festival on Sunday, June 9, 2019! The museum will run special workshops and performances celebrating the LGBTQ+ community in recognition of Pride month. Story Time will be held at 11 am hosted by Little Rainbows: Storytime at the Lesbian Herstory Archives. Performances and interactive singalongs with drag artist and activist Marti Gould Cummings will take place at 12 pm and 2 pm. We are excited to welcome back 11-year-old drag kid Desmond Napoles aka “Desmond is Amazing” as an honorary guest of our festival!
Workshops include:
Identity As A Creative Space in the Gallery: CMA Teaching Artist Julia Rich will lead a special workshop surrounding identity exploration. Explore the things that make you you by creating a Magical Identity Being representing the multitudes of features that make you who you are. Turn to textures, colors, and shapes to represent your inner expression in a safe, nurturing environment. Attendees will leave with art that describes how they see themselves and with tools to converse with their loved ones about this identity.
Pocket Objects inspired by Zoe Schlacter in Fine Arts: Zoe Schlacter is an interdisciplinary artist that uses the performance of personal style to create queer intersections of textiles and gender. They create “pocket objects” using hand weaving and beading to make small wearables to demonstrate their personal style! What kind of pocket object would you make? Join us in learning about Zoe’s techniques and try making a pocket object of your own!
Identity Trophies inspired by Harriet Horton in Fine Arts: Artist Harriet Horton creates taxidermy of what she calls “every day” animals in order to challenge gender stereotypes. Horton then creates trophies for the animals to immortalize them and her own identity within them. Today in the studio we are creating trophies of everyday things that celebrate our identities. What is something in your life that is a big part of who you are? What kind of trophy would you create for it?
LGBTQ Leaders in Action in the Media Lab: Tell your own story using cut-outs of iconic cultural and historical figures such as Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Harvey Milk, Eleanor Roosevelt, Artemis, Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, and Oscar Wilde! Each person was significant in their own historical time and place for a movement much greater than themselves. Break through the boundary of time and place and to celebrate lives and contributions of these amazing people!
Flags of Identity at the Clay Bar: By mixing clay we can make beautiful marbled designs, celebrating inclusivity and the power of love. Did you know that each color on the Pride Flag has a meaning? Come make your own rainbow flag to celebrate!
Love is… in the Sound Booth: Make a song about all the different kinds of love — love for your pet, for your mom or dad, for your crush… There are many different kinds of love and all should be celebrated!
