Q&A with LE TEMPS PERDU Filmmaker María Álvarez, Co-presented by Cinema Tropical

New York-based Cinema Tropical is the leading presenter of Latin American cinema in the United States. Founded in 2001 with the mission of distributing, programming, and promoting what has become the largest boom of Latin American cinema in decades, CT brought U.S. audiences some of the first screenings of films such as AMORES PERROS and Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN. Through a diversity of programs and initiatives, CT is thriving as a dynamic and groundbreaking 501(c)(3) non-profit media arts organization experimenting in the creation of better and more effective strategies for the distribution, exhibition, and support of foreign cinema and its communities in this country. In 2021 and 2011, coinciding with Cinema Tropical’s 20th and 10th anniversaries, respectively, The Museum of Modern Art paid tribute to the organization with two retrospective series.

María Álvarez is an Argentine writer and director. She has directed LAS CINÉPHILAS (2017) and LAS CERCANAS (2021) in addition to LE TEMPS PERDU. The three films form a documentary trilogy that relates the passage of time and art. Her films have been screened at international festivals such as IDFA, Locarno Critic’s Week,Thessaloniki, Göteborg, DocAviv, Mar del Plata, Gijón, DocLisboa, BAFICI, Femcine, La Havana, Sydney, Cartagena, and Krakow, among many others, winning several awards.

Carlos A. Gutiérrez is co-founding executive director of Cinema Tropical, the media arts non-profit organization, which is the leading presenter of Latin American cinema in the U.S. As a guest curator, he has presented several series at numerous institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art, Film at Lincoln Center, the Guggenheim Museum, Film at BAM, and Anthology Film Archives. In 2007, he co-curated the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar and currently serves as artistic director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s Latin Wave film festival and as co-director of Cinema Tucsón. He sits in Film Forum’s Board of Directors and has served as a juror for various film festivals including Tribeca, Mar del Plata, New Orleans, Morelia, Seattle, and SANFIC. He has served as both expert nominator and panelist for the Sundance Documentary Fund, Tribeca Film Institute’s Latin America Media Arts Fund, and the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.
