Gabriel Rowland and his old buddy Victor Benavides formed Los Yesterdays in an Altadena garage. Rowland, a long-time drummer and eccentric maker of numerous soulful things, oversaw recording and played all instruments, while Benavides penned and cut vocals. The project largely remained in their garage for a few years until a common connection brought them to the attention of Tom Brenneck and Gabe Roth, both of whom enjoyed the tunes and offered to join in on guitar and bass, respectively, so that the duo could perform their music live. The four quickly found themselves with a handful of shows behind them and a Penrose recording date ahead of them.
