Open-source hardware company, Adafruit designs, manufactures and sells a number of electronics products, electronics components, tools and accessories. However in response to the COVID-19 crisis, the business run by  Limor “Ladyada” Fried pivoted and began operating as an essential service and manufacturing business, making PPE, including face shields created via 3D printer and medical device components, some that were necessary for ventilators. Limor, an MIT engineer, was appointed to the Small Business Sector Advisory Council by the City of New York in 2020 to help restart the NYC economy post COVID-19 pandemic. Her company, founded in 2005 a 100% woman owned manufacturing company, and a certified Minority and Woman-owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE).
