We are thrilled to share some exciting news! The Hudson Square BID has recently been featured on PIX 11 News for our innovative sustainability initiative in partnership with Seven Grams Caffe and City-as-School. This venture not only promotes environmental consciousness but also showcases the power of collaboration in making a positive impact on our urban landscape.

Partnership with Seven Grams Caffe:

Seven Grams Caffe, known for its dedication to the perfect espresso shot, has joined forces with the BID to turn coffee grounds into a valuable resource. Instead of discarding coffee waste, Seven Grams is now contributing nitrogen-rich coffee grounds to our composting efforts, aiding in the care of over 500 trees in our neighborhood.

City-as-School’s Educational Involvement:

City-as-School, a high school committed to innovative education, has become an integral part of our green initiative. The students at City-as-School are actively involved in our composting project, turning it into a valuable learning opportunity. Under the guidance of their biology teacher, Naima Freitas, students are delving into the science behind how coffee grounds enhance soil quality, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the right pH levels for optimal tree growth.

We are honored to have caught the attention of PIX 11 News, who recently highlighted our sustainable efforts. This recognition amplifies our commitment to creating a greener and healthier environment in Hudson Square. The news coverage sheds light on the importance of rethinking waste disposal practices, especially when it comes to commonly discarded items like coffee grounds.

The Impact of Coffee Grounds on the Environment:

According to a study by the Journal of Cleaner Production, a staggering 60 million tons of coffee grounds are discarded annually. When disposed of in landfills, these coffee grounds release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. By incorporating coffee grounds into our composting efforts, we are not only diverting waste from landfills but also contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Looking Ahead:

Our green initiative doesn’t stop here. Hudson Square BID is committed to continuing our sustainability efforts through the winter, with plans to assess and follow up on the results in the spring. We encourage other businesses and organizations to join us in fostering a culture of sustainability, showing that small actions can lead to significant positive changes. We express our gratitude to Seven Grams Caffe, City-as-School, and PIX 11 News for their support and collaboration.
