Hudson Square Receives a $4.5 Million Award to Fund Six Transformative Projects

May 22, 2025

Hudson Square has been awarded $4.5 million through New York State’s NY Forward program to support six major projects that will enhance public space, support local institutions, and strengthen the neighborhood’s identity as a creative and connected urban district.

Announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, the funding is part of a broader initiative to revitalize downtowns across the state. Hudson Square’s selected projects reflect a shared commitment to creating a greener, more vibrant neighborhood for all who live, work, and visit here.

“This is a transformative and exciting moment of growth for Hudson Square,” said Samara Karasyk, President & CEO of the Hudson Square BID. “These projects build on our continued efforts to create dynamic public spaces and a more connected street-level experience.”

The Six Funded Projects in Hudson Square:

  • “Hudson-Houston” Plaza ($867,000): A new signature public space at Hudson and Houston Streets will transform an underutilized corner into a green, welcoming gateway to the neighborhood.

  • Little 6th Avenue Plaza ($744,000): This project expands Spring Street Park and establishes a permanent plaza that will offer additional space for programming, play, and relaxation.

  • Film Forum Lighting Upgrade ($75,000): The beloved local cinema will upgrade its lighting systems to improve energy efficiency and enhance the visitor experience.

  • Hudson Square Color Walk ($600,000): An interactive art-meets-wayfinding project will highlight local businesses and institutions with colorful installations and a sculpture to anchor the experience.

  • Jackie Robinson Museum Sculpture ($227,000): A bronze statue of Jackie Robinson will be installed at the Museum, enhancing street-level visibility and celebrating the trailblazing athlete’s legacy.

  • NYC Fire Museum Event Space Renovation ($1,987,000): The third floor of the Museum will be renovated to host events and fire safety classes, helping to sustain and grow this vital Hudson Square institution.

These initiatives were selected through a rigorous community engagement process, guided by local leaders, stakeholders, and the Hudson Square BID as part of the NY Forward planning framework. Together, we aim to improve the quality of life, support cultural anchors, and connect Hudson Square to the community.
