The Graphic Design department and the Journalism classes worked together to research and create a 32 foot interactive insulation featuring African American illustrators. The students worked to answer the question, “Could the Civil Rights Movement have happened without the Black Press and it’s Illustrators?” The students went on a journey and traced the movement back to it’s roots and the birth of the Black Press with the publication of “Freedoms Journal,” the first African American newspaper. The paper was printed just steps away from the back doors of the high school. The story that unfolded was the process and stages of identity both personal and as a group of people that lead to the fight for civil rights. in this story are a lot of unsung heroes and lesser known warriors that blazed the trail. The installation includes interactive graphic designs and illustrations along with research on the time periods and illustrators.
