New Plaza Design Approved in Hudson Square

February 6, 2025

NYC Parks, NYC DEP, and Hudson Square BID have jointly unveiled the schematic design for a dynamic new public space — located at the corner of Hudson and Houston Streets. Covering approximately 0.26 acres, this project will transform an urban corner into a vibrant, flexible gathering place inspired by Eduardo Kobra’s iconic Ellis mural.

The design envisions a multi-use plaza featuring movable seating, interactive “Daydreamer” swing benches that incorporate music, movement, and light, and a tree-and-umbrella bosque that offers greenery and shade. A distinctive fence and trellis around the perimeter will celebrate the neighborhood’s rich history, with “Daydreaming” engraved in the six most commonly spoken languages in New York City — a nod to Hudson Square’s multicultural heritage and its legacy as a former printing district.

“Public spaces should inspire and reflect the communities they serve, and the design for Hudson-Houston Plaza seeks to do just that”, said NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue. “NYC Parks is proud to partner with NYC DEP and the Hudson Square BID, and we look forward to bringing this uniquely creative and dynamic plaza to life—one that will capture the energy, diversity, and artistic spirit of New York City.”

“The unique design of Hudson-Houston Plaza supports DEP’s continued operations and offers an engaging open space for New Yorkers,” said NYC DEP Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala. “We’re proud to partner with the Hudson Square BID and the Parks Department to advance this vision for the community and expand New York City’s public realm.”

Developed through an extensive community engagement process that involved over 600 local residents, workers, and students, the project reflects guiding principles of flexibility, inclusivity, and art-centric design. Funded at $3.62 million by the Office of the Mayor, in partnership with NYC DEP, NYC Parks, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, and the Hudson Square BID, the project is set to further integrate Hudson Square’s public spaces with neighboring areas like the West Village and Hudson River Park.

The project will now move into the bidding phase under NYC Parks management, with construction timelines and additional details to be announced soon.
