HSBID made renovations to Freeman Plaza East in 2021 to provide our community with vibrant, accessible outdoor spaces perfect for both peaceful relaxation and productive work.
Improvements include:
- Lush new plantings to act as natural buffers, protecting the park from surrounding tunnel approaches
- accessible pathways leading to new seating and table furnishings
- Wi-Fi access to support outdoor working
- Decking islands made from recycled materials
Freeman Plaza East originally opened in September 2014, as part of our on-going effort to make Hudson Square a place that puts people first. It is furnished with tables, lounge chairs and umbrellas on platforms and of course our giant red Noguchi sculpture.
In light of Covid-19, the space was modified in 2020 to accommodate social distancing and to provide the community with more critical outdoor space. It’s a great place to hang out, clear your mind and let your imagination fly.
Freeman Plaza East is open Seasonally, Spring – Fall, Daily from 8am-dusk.
The entrance is on Varick Street – between Broome and Watts Streets.
Freeman Plaza East is owned and operated by the Port Authority of NY&NJ.
